WOOD
FINISHING
Ease of Application
This
factor is generally of primary consideration to the beginner.
The experienced worker will be familiar with the problems involved
when working with various finishes and will approach each accordingly.
The beginner should be cautioned against placing too much importance
on the ease of application. Although much is said about the difficulty
of working with such finishes as varnish or lacquer, these techniques
can be learned after n relatively short practice period.
Cost
Although better quality finishing materials are not always equated
on a one-to-one basis with hioher prices, you will generally discover
that the better ones cost more. It is quite discouraging to find
that the bargain priced finish you acquired has resulted in a
curiosity you prefer to keep hidden in the attic. On the other
hand, do not rush to your nearest retail supplier and purchase
the most expensive item in stock. If you are acquainted with the
people working there, ask their advice. They will usually he quite
honest with you and will try to supply you with finishing materials
that will best fulfill your needs.
Intended Service Conditions
How is the piece of furniture to be used? In other words, to what
specific service conditions will the wood surface be subjected?
These are very important questions for they bear rather heavily
upon your ultimate selection. Furniture that will be subjected
to rough usage should be well protected by a tough finish.
