Powdered abrasives such as pumice stone and rottenstone are more difficult to use than other types of abrasives. It is often recommended that pumice be sifted through some sort of screening device before use in order to remove lumps and impurities. The screen must be of a design that will allow the fine pumice powder to penetrate into a pan below while at the same time blocking the passage of lumps and other impurities. Cheesecloth is frequently recommended for this purpose.

Pumice stone is coarser than rottenstone and therefore faster cutting. It should only be used on surfaces that are absolutely flat or the powder will fall away from the surface and reduce the overall efficiency of the rubbing operation.
