CABINET SCRAPERS, HAND SCRAPERS, AND SPOKESHAVES

Some finishes use a cabinet scraper and hand scraper to prepare a flat wood surface prior to the sanding operation. Scrapers are planelike tools used in wood preparation when large amounts of material have to be removed from the surface, particularly when this cannot be accomplished satisfactorily with a plane (e.g. on a hard, cross-grained wood). The cabinet scraper is used initially for the coarser work, and is followed by the hand scraper which is designed to produce an even smoother surface. The spokeshave provides the same smoothing operation for curved surfaces.
